"Your own resolution to success is much more important than another one thing." - Abraham Lincoln
Bianca rose on the sound of pigeons cooing and traffic grumbling all the time below. As she yawned and stretched, she thought about what was waiting for her on that day.
She felt her motivation slowly drain away each and every deadline and commitment that zipped through her thoughts. As Bianca started to wither and wilt internally, she remembered the motivation pills she had purchased last week through the Good Value Pharmacy.
There were yellow pills labeled 'Money', pink pills labeled 'Pride', green pills labeled 'Family', purple pills labeled 'Respect' and several ugly grey pills labeled 'Nagging Advice'. The chemist had informed her as he dispensed the pills that some works for her and some may not... he could never tell in advance which pills is correct for which customers. With this advice in mind along with a smile on her lips, Bianca reached for your one she knew could be just right for her...
Among the best things you can do for yourself on your journey of self discovery would be to work out what drives you. The initial step is to identify your values because they provide the fuel for your motivation and the drive behind anything you do in life. If you'd prefer something you will always obtain the motivation and energy to get it done. If you don't value something, you will always struggle to find the motivation and energy to make it happen.

Your values are precisely what are important to you. These are broad concepts that guide your decisions in life and form the basis of your character. Your values also determine how you spend your time. For instance, if your most important value is health, you will spend your time quite differently from someone whose most crucial value is career or family.
Values also drive your entire motivation. You won't pursue an alternative unless it relates to something you value at some level. Identifying your values enables you to kick-start your own motivation, set goals which can be appropriate and invest some time on things that you require.
How Your Values Are Formed
Your values come from a number of sources together with your family, friends, religion, school, teachers, country as well as the media. They are also shaped anytime in your life by significant emotional events for example natural disasters, emotional abuse, global depression or war.
Your values change when you grow and evolve. Once you change your values, you will also change some of your beliefs and the way you live life.
The way to Identify Your Personal Values
Identifying your individual values helps you to:
- Understand why some issues can be a problem for you;
- See why the main things motivate you and others don't; and
- Identify and overcome problem areas of your life.
For example, assume you've got weight issues. You determine your own values and find that health and fitness doesn't even rate a mention inside your values. You may have found the reasons why you are having weight issues, i.e. physical fitness is not something you value. Although this remains the case it'll be very difficult for you to slim down and gain a greater a higher level health and fitness in your life as you will not have any motivation to take action.
You can identify your values by thinking about:
- What is important to me in relation to my life, career, relationships etc?
- What would cause me to go away my life, career, relationships, etc?
If you have an understanding of your values, it will pay to see how they affect your motivation.
Your values drive your motivation. In case you set goals which can be aligned with your values, you've got the motivation to help you achieve them. If you set goals that are not in line with your values, it'll be an uphill struggle to achieve them.
When you understand your values and their impact on how you are still motivating yourself you will find a wonderful insight into the reasons you achieve the results that you simply do in life. You will also discover how to motivate yourself more effectively down the road.
Motivation comes either from the inside you (intrinsic motivation) or from a source (extrinsic motivation).
Extrinsic motivationis furnished by some factor external for you. It can take the form of inducements (rewards) or punishments. The rewards can be tangible or intangible (like praise).
Intrinsic motivationis evident whenever you engage in an activity for the own sake without the external incentive. It appears from research produced by Albert Bandura that if you've more self efficacy (belief in your abilities to control your environment) you're more highly intrinsically motivated than others.
As intrinsic motivation could be the only one you can tote around and call upon whenever you want, it is the most important when it comes to self motivation.
Intrinsic motivation might be broken down further into 'towards' motivation and 'away from' motivation. 'Towards' motivation is motivation towards something want and 'away from' motivation is motivation from something you don't want.
'Away From' Motivation
'Away from' motivation is driven by pain. Pain motivated performance isn't pleasant, produces inconsistent results and disappears in the event the pain is no longer present.
'Away from motivation' does, however, supply you with a strong initial motivation to go away from the thing you don't want that you experienced. A problem with using this type of motivation is that you simply wait until things are bad prior to taking action to change them. One other issue is that you don't have a target or goal that you will be aiming for (just something are running from) so you don't tend to achieve results.
Sophia uses 'away from' motivation regarding her weight. Because of this she is the classic yo yo dieter. Her process goes similar to this. Sophia looks in the mirror and is aware that she is overweight. She says to herself, 'I don't want to be fat anymore'. She then continues a diet to ensure she's no longer fat. (She's moving away from being fat). At some time she looks in the mirror and is aware that she looks fantastic and is also no longer fat. As she's no longer fat, she's just lost the source of her motivation (to stop fat). As there is no more any motivation, she no longer stays on the diet and discards her workout. She will not be motivated to do whatever she has to stay fit and healthy. During the future she will view in the mirror and again constitute the judgment that she is fat and also the process will start all over again.
When you are motivated far from something that you don't want in life, you tend to focus upon ab muscles thing you don't want and that is what you attract into your life. As examples:
- If you constantly notify yourself, 'I don't want to be broke', your focus is upon being broke and that's where your unconscious mind will aim.
- If you constantly inform yourself, "I don't want to be single", your focus is upon being single and that's where your unconscious mind will aim.
Motivation faraway from what you don't want can inspire you, but it doesn't achieve this for long and you can't be sure what results you are going to achieve. It can give you a fantastic initial boost of one's, but you can never guarantee what your location is going to end up as you do not possess a firm direction planned, just a place you want to get away from. If you use faraway from motivation in your life, you may tend to create a series of crises to keep yourself motivated.
If you utilize 'towards motivation' you will take action to move towards your goal and you may achieve them generally.
'Towards' motivation is the best approach to motivate yourself. When you are motivated towards what you would like, you tend to stay consistently motivated unless you achieve your goal (provided you want it enough).
When you find yourself motivated towards what you want, you constantly set and have goals each time stretching yourself further. By using motivation towards what you would like you give yourself a far larger chance of achieving what you look for out of life.
Can you be sure If The Motivation You utilize Is 'Towards' Or 'Away From' Motivation?
Now that we know that values drive your motivation and that motivation can be either towards what you look for or away from what you don't want. Now it is time to review your values to discover whether the underlying motivation for each of your values is:
- towards what you want; or
- away from what you don't want.
To determine if the underlying motivation for every value is 'towards' or 'away from' contemplate, "Why is that value vital that you me?" then tune in to your self-talk and note everything you say to yourself. The clues to whether you are using towards or away from motivation for that value are:
You are probably using 'towards' motivation if you:
- talk about what you do want
- don't use comparisons with your explanation (better than, worse than, over)
You are probably using 'away from' motivation in case you:
- talk about what you don't want
- make comparisons with your explanation or use words like 'better than', 'more than', 'less than', 'best' etc. (These show you are unhappy with that you currently are)
- use words for example 'must', 'need', 'have to', 'got to' etc
As an example, believe that 'money' was your highest value in terms of your career. You then think about, "Why is the value 'compensation' crucial that you me in relation to my career?"
Should your answer is, "Because I want to come up with a lot of money and are in luxury", the response would indicate 'towards' motivation just for this value.
If your response is, "Because I don't want to be broke and that i have to be able to pay my bills", the response would indicate 'away from' motivation for this value.
Your chances of achieving goals associated with 'money' are much greater if you utilize towards motivation.
Should you have identified 'away from' motivation in relation to any of your values, you'll find:
- This area of your life is one that you will experience the most difficulties;
- You are not achieving the results in the bradenton area of your life that you might wish; and

This is wonderful information to possess as it identifies areas of your life for you to focus upon.
